Astronaut Shares Emotional Distress After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
