At Least 98 Palestinian Individuals Have Died in Israeli Custody Since October 2023, Official Figures Reveals

High-Profile Cases
Certain fatalities in confinement have been publicly known, including a middle-aged medical chief who perished in confinement after a third of a year in detention.
A detainee incarcerated with the victim testified that he was brought to the courtyard by correctional officers shortly before his death, clearly wounded and naked from the hips downward. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.
Other prisoners who perished in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. The prison service and defense forces provided researchers with the number of deaths in confinement, and minimal other details including the facility where they died, but without the inmates’ personal details.
Identification Challenges
In 21 cases, mainly individuals from Gaza, researchers were unable to connect the few details provided by officials to a fatality registered by rights organisations, by means of testimony from former inmates or accounts in the news outlets.
